Building a standout modelling portfolio

Your portfolio is the single most important tool in your modelling career. Before a client ever meets you, they meet your images – so a strong, well-rounded portfolio is what turns a submission into a booking. Here is how to build one that works, whether you are a brand-new face or refreshing an existing book.

Digitals come first

Every model needs a current set of digitals (also called polaroids or snapshots). These are simple, natural, minimally edited images that show exactly how you look today – no heavy makeup, no retouching, no filters. Agencies and clients rely on digitals to see the real you.

  • A clear front-facing headshot with natural expression
  • A relaxed smiling headshot
  • A side profile
  • A three-quarter or half-body shot
  • A full-length shot in fitted clothing (a plain top and jeans is perfect)

Keep the background clean, the lighting even, and your hair off your face. Digitals should be updated every few months, or whenever your look changes.

What a full portfolio should include

Once your digitals are sorted, a professional portfolio builds range around them. A well-rounded book shows a client you can deliver across different jobs:

  • Clean beauty headshots that highlight skin and structure
  • Commercial, approachable smiling portraits
  • Fashion or editorial-style images with stronger styling
  • Front-facing and side-profile portraits
  • Half-body and full-body images
  • At least one image that shows genuine personality and movement

Quality over quantity

A tight portfolio of ten to fifteen strong images beats a folder of fifty average ones. Every image should earn its place. Cut anything that is out of date, poorly lit, or too similar to another shot. Variety in styling, expression and crop is what makes a book feel professional.

Work with the right photographer

The best portfolios come from a guided session with a photographer who understands casting. A good session includes professional lighting, direction on posing and expression, and the chance to review images as you shoot. Australian Model Agency is based in Brunswick, Melbourne, and we help the talent on our board develop portfolios that get them in front of the right clients.
