How to prepare for your first modelling casting

Your first casting can feel nerve-wracking, but preparation makes all the difference. Castings are quick, and first impressions count – so arriving ready, relaxed and camera-ready gives you the best possible chance. Here is exactly how to prepare.

What to bring

  • Your current digitals (recent, natural snapshots)
  • A comp card or portfolio if you have one
  • A copy of your measurements and stats
  • A positive, professional attitude

What to wear

Keep it simple. Casting directors want to see you, not your outfit. Choose clean, well-fitted clothing that shows your shape without distraction:

  • Fitted, plain clothing in solid colours
  • Minimal patterns, logos and accessories
  • Skin-tone or simple footwear
  • Natural, well-groomed hair off the face
  • Light, natural makeup (or none, unless told otherwise)

Posing and expression basics

You do not need to be an expert, but a few fundamentals help you look confident on camera. During a professional shoot the photographer will guide you, but it helps to practise:

  • Standing tall with relaxed shoulders and good posture
  • Lengthening your neck and keeping your chin slightly forward and down
  • Making genuine eye contact with the camera
  • Softening your expression – a real, relaxed look reads better than a forced smile
  • Keeping hands relaxed and natural

On the day

Arrive early, be polite to everyone you meet, and listen carefully to direction. Castings move fast, so stay calm and follow instructions. If you are asked to walk, keep it steady and natural. Confidence and professionalism are remembered long after the casting ends.

After the casting

Not every casting leads to a booking, and that is completely normal – even the most experienced models are turned down regularly. Treat each one as practice. Australian Model Agency guides the talent on our Melbourne board through castings from start to finish, so you are never walking in unprepared.
