The runway is one of the most exciting parts of modelling – and one of the most technical. A strong walk projects confidence and lets the clothes move as the designer intended. Here are five tips to sharpen your next runway walk.
1. Start with posture
Everything begins with how you carry yourself. Stand tall, drop and relax your shoulders, lengthen your neck and engage your core. Good posture makes any walk look more assured before you have taken a single step.
2. Find your pace
A runway walk is steady and deliberate – not rushed. Keep a consistent rhythm, place one foot almost directly in front of the other, and let your arms swing naturally and subtly. Practise to music to build a smooth, even tempo.
3. Fix your eyeline
Pick a point at the end of the runway, slightly above eye level, and hold it. A steady gaze reads as confidence and stops you from looking down at your feet.
4. Master the turn
At the end of the runway, keep turns crisp and controlled. Pause briefly, turn cleanly, and hold your composure before walking back. Rehearse turns until they feel automatic.
5. Practise, then relax
Confidence comes from repetition. Rehearse in the shoes and, on the day, trust your preparation and let the nerves settle. Designers and show producers cast for models who look calm and in command.
